Representative of the western region, windmills are a strong presence in the municipality of Lourinhã, and being a miller was once one of the most emblematic professions in the territory. The advent of the Industrial Revolution and the adoption of more efficient processes for almost everything threw the old windmills into disuse.
In Pinhôa, parish of Moita dos Ferreiros, there is a nucleus of 5 windmills. After the restoration of the five windmills, three maintain their traditional activity and the other two have been transformed (one into a bar and the other into a holiday home). These windmills are a distinctive landmark in the rural landscape. They are also evidence of the people’s wisdom and technical know-how as far as harnessing the endogenous potential of their surroundings is concerned.
