PR4 - From Dinosaurs To Rock
The PR4 LNH - From Dinosaurs to Rock extends from the coastal area of Porto Dinheiro Beach to the western slope of Cabeço da Pedra do Sino, also known as “Rocha” (Rock). You can choose to start the hike either at the village of Ribamar or at Porto Dinheiro Beach. When starting at Ribamar, the route proceeds towards the coast and soon joins the GR11 E9 – Caminhos do Atlântico (Atlantic Route) up to Porto Dinheiro Beach. Land of fishermen and important paleontological findings. We recommend a visit to the beach, to the former tax guard post and to the dinosaur’s terrace. A few meters ahead, the route leaves the GR11-E9, and shortly before returning to Ribamar, a short detour is recommended to the public washhouses of the “rio do povo” (people’s river). In the village, it is possible to visit the “Fonte Velha” (Old Fountain) and the “Poço da Quinta” (Farm’s Well). Finally, the route goes up the Cabeço da Pedra do Sino, from where you can enjoy the excellent coastal landscape and the view of the path you have just completed.
VALE DA ROCHA AND CABEÇO DA PEDRA DO SINO
Cabeço da Pedra do Sino, in the parish of Santa Bárbara, is at the top of the limestone unit of Vimeiro. In this mount, it is possible to observe several cavities that are part of an orthogonal configuration system, associated with the Cova do Texugo and the Cova da Moura. This area has a high ecological and landscape interest with local vegetation being composed of oaks, kermes oaks and ash trees. In the east slope of this mount, when looking NNE-SSW, you can observe the Lourinhã Fault.
PORTO DINHEIRO BEACH
It is an extensive and beautiful beach located next to the small fishing community, where good restaurants stand out. The daily departure of the small fishing boats is a moment that you should not miss. This beach is the venue for the famous Feast of the Sea, with its traditional cow race taking place on the beach, outside the limits of the Blue Flag demarcations. Happening each year, on the first weekend of August, it is a very visited and traditional festivity of this region. Big crowds also converge at the Sea Procession of Nª Sª de Monserrate, going from the Porto Dinheiro beach to Peniche towards the celebration in honour of Nª Sª da Boa Viagem, which also takes place each year, in the beginning of August.
The Municipality of Lourinhã is located in one of the richest regions in fossils from the Upper Jurassic (with about 150 million years) in Portugal and it is also one of the 20 richest regions in the world. During this period, this region was in the middle of a huge river basin where an estuarine network with watercourses merged and attracted all animal life, including the impressive dinosaurs and primitive mammals. This group of watercourses that fed this wildlife also preserved it through exceptional fossilization processes. In the cliffs between the beaches of Porto Dinheiro and Paimogo, several fossils and bones of dinosaurs were discovered. These allowed the identification of the presence of several species in this zone, namely the sauropods Supersaurus lourinhanensis, discovered on the cliffs of the Porto Dinheiro beach, and the Lourinhanosaurus antunesi, discovered in Peralta and considered the most emblematic dinosaur of Lourinhã. It is also important to mention the discovery of a skeleton of the Lusotitan atalaiensis, in Atalaia, and of a nesting area of the Lourinhanosaurus antunesi discovered in Paimogo. For more information on these discoveries and the Jurassic period, we recommend a visit to the Lourinhã Museum and to the Dinoparque.
